Senior Hayden Stevens brought home a 1st place finish in his 215 lb. weight class at Saturday's South Williamsport Mountaineer Invitational.
Stevens went 3-0 on the day, pinning Muncy's Dylan Sander in 57 seconds in his quarterfinal match, then scoring a 2:25 pin against Loyalsock's Tristan Van Fleet in the semi-finals. Stevens drew NTL foe Ben Ellis from Northeast Bradford for the championship bout, pinning him in 2:51.
"Hayden did a nice job yesterday dominating his way through the tournament," head coach Bryce Bitner said. "He pinned his way through including his finals match avenging an earlier loss in the year at Hughesville's Spartan Duals. I'm proud of the way he pushed through some pains yesterday to finish strong and claim his first title at South Williamsport."
Freshman Mason Greene (107) and junior Wyatt Kilburn (172) also took home top-five finishes on the day.
Greene dropped his first two matches of the day, falling to Muncy's Gannon Swank in 1:26. He then suffered an 8-2 decision to Lackawanna Trail's Cidney Schaffer in the consolation semi-finals before scoring a forfeit over Swank in the 5th place match.
Kilburn suffered a 21-5 (3:26) tech fall to South Williamsport's Jayden Hamm in his quarterfinal match to start his day, but won his next two matches against Valley View's Ethan Domenick (2:10 pin) and Jamie Frushon (1:39 pin) to reach the consolation semi-finals. He dropped his semi-final match to South Williamsport's Eli White (14-7 decision) before pinning Muncy's Cameron Caldwell in 1:06 in the 5th place match.
Sophomore Gavin Carson went 2-3 on the day to finish in 6th place at 160 lbs. Carson scored wins over Valley View's Gage Jackson (pin) and Scranton Prep's Aldo Camacho (4:26 pin).
As a team the Hornets finished in 11th place with 57 points.
Wellsboro is back on the mats Tuesday at Williamson.
