SJNRA Pulls Away From Wellsboro In 4th Quarter

St. John Neumann used a 20-point 4th quarter to pull away for a 64-57 win over the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team on Monday.

The Hornets held a 12-10 lead after the opening quarter but the Golden Knights rallied and outscored Wellsboro 18-16 in the 2nd to knot the game up at 28-all heading into halftime. Neumann edged the Hornets 16-15 following the break to take a one-point lead heading into the final frame.

"Tough loss. We played hard and got contributions from lots of guys," head coach Ron Doughtie said. "We left some points out there, but the effort was there from everyone."

Three Hornets scored in double figures on the evening, led by junior Colin Fletcher with 19. Junior Gideon Lawton added 13 and sophomore Griffin Morral chipped in 11. Senior Luke Rothermel finished with 8 points, senior Jonathan Carl added 4 points and senior Marek Mascho scored two points.

Rothermel added 8 rebounds and 4 assists, Carl grabbed 6 boards and made 4 steals, Morral had 5 rebounds and 2 assists, and Lawton made 3 rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Daiton Thompson led St. John Neumann, and all scorers, with 38 points.

Wellsboro continued their undefeated run (13-0), winning the JV game 57-24 behind 13 points from freshman Braylen Jessup.

The loss drops the Hornets to 6-7. The team is back in action Wednesday at North Penn-Liberty.
