The North Penn-Liberty Mounties went on a 13-4 run in the 4th quarter to defeat Wellsboro 42-37 Monday, handing the Hornets their 3rd straight loss.
After a slow start to the game both teams were tied at 8-all after the first quarter. North Penn-Liberty then went on a 11-7 run in the second to lead 19-15 heading into the half.
Wellsboro flipped the script to begin the 2nd half, going on an 18-10 run to take a 33-29 lead heading into the 4th.
The Mounties defense tightened over the final eight minutes, holding the Hornets to just 4 points in the quarter. Wellsboro failed to score until the last two and a half minutes to go in the game, despite only trailing by five.
Turnovers ultimately did the Hornets in, as they committed 21 on the night to the Mounties' seven.
Junior Colin Fletcher led all scorers with 16 points while senior Jonathan Carl had 8 points. Sophomore Griffin Morral and senior Marek Mascho scored 4 points apiece, senior Luke Rothermel finished with 3 points, and junior Gideon Lawton pitched in two points.
Carl pulled down a team and game-high 13 rebounds. Fletcher added 6 boards and made 3 steals while Rothermel had 5 rebounds and 2 assists.
Landon Mattern (15) and Luke Kreger (14) led the Mounties on the evening. Brody Grinnell also added 5 steals and Conner Lewis had 11 rebounds.
Both teams shot over 60 percent from the foul line. Wellsboro finished 7-of-11 (.636) and North Penn-Liberty went 8-for-13 (.615).
Wellsboro won the JV game 32-18 to start the evening to improve to 14-0 on the season. Sophomore RJ Doughtie and freshman James Doughtie both finished with 7 points each to lead the Hornets.
The loss drops the Hornets to 6-8 (5-4 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action at Cowanesque Valley Friday.
