Senior Marek Mascho pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team to a 2-0 win over Towanda on Thursday, April 23.
He also struck out six Black Knight batters on the day with only one walk.
"This was a very well played baseball game today," head coach Kyle Smith commented. "Pitchers threw strikes, defenses played well and we were fortunate to score a few runs. Marek was very efficient on the mound tonight and our defense stepped up in key spots to limit the base runners.
"We were also pleased to be able to celebrate Marek’s 100 career hit in a Wellsboro Hornet uniform which he achieved earlier this week. He is the definition of consistency at the plate and it has been a pleasure to coach him and watch him play. His contributions to this team and program have been tremendous and although this is cliche to say, he is also an outstanding human being and teammate!"
Wellsboro scored both of their runs in the bottom of the 3rd. With one out Mascho doubled to center then advanced to third as junior Coen Tennis reached base on an error. With runners on the corners junior Max Mascho drove in his older brother on a ground out to short. Tennis then scored on a passed ball with senior Cameron Owlett at bat.
Marek Mascho, Max Mascho and sophomore Griffin Morral each finished 1-for-3 at the plate for the Hornets' three hits. Towanda was also limited to three hits in the game.
The win improves the Hornets' record to 8-2 (7-1 NTL Large School Division). The team turns right around to square off against the Black Knights again, this time on the road, later this afternoon.
