Sophomore Adelyn Frantz rewrote the Wellsboro Softball record books by recording her 189th strikeout this season as she helped the Lady Hornets rally to defeat Northeast Bradford, 3-0, on Thursday afternoon.
Frantz surpassed former Lady Hornet Alyssa Yungwirth with 13 strikeouts. Yungwirth struck out 178 batters in 2017. Frantz now sits at 322 strikeouts for her career and sits behind Yungwirth's 392.
Northeast Bradford opened the game by scoring three quick runs. Wellsboro's offense took a few innings to warm up, but they began to chip away at NEB's lead in the bottom of the 4th.
Sophomore Delaney Morral led off the inning with a walk then advanced into scoring position on a base hit to left by sophomore Teagan Novinger. Morral then moved third on a bad throw. Both Morral and Novinger scored as freshman Gena Fleming doubled to left two at bats later.
Wellsboro took the lead one inning later in the 5th with three runs. With two outs Frantz singled to get on baes then scored as Morral ripped a base hit to right field to tie the game at 3-all. Morral scored on a base hit from Novinger, then a double by sophomore Kaylee Frazier scored Novinger to put the Lady Hornets up, 5-3.
The Lady Hornets added two insurance runs in the 6th as senior Harleigh Cleveland and sophomore Rylee Coolidge both crossed home plate. Frantz drove in Coolidge on a triple to left-center.
Frantz (2-for-4), Morral (2-for-3) and Novinger (2-for-3) led the Lady Hornets at the plate. Coolidge, Frazier, Fleming, junior Mazie Johnson and Cleveland made up the rest of Wellsboro's 11 hits.
Frantz threw a complete game, scattering 5 hits and walking 7 to go along with her 13 strikeouts.
Karmyn McPherson, Madalyn Callear and MacKenzie Clark scored Northeast Bradford's runs. Callear took the loss on the mound, allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 11 hits with a walk and 2 strikeouts.
