Big 2nd Quarter Propels Wildcats To 60-48 Win Over Wellsboro

A 25-point 2nd quarter by the Athens Wildcats led to a 60-48 defeat of the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team on Monday night.

The Wildcats got nine points out of Eli Hobday, all from behind the three-point line in the quarter, to blow open what was a one-point, 9-8, game entering the 2nd. Following the 25-point quarter Athens held a 34-17 lead over the Hornets.

A 12-8 3rd quarter by the Wildcats opened up the lead to 46-25 entering the 4th quarter. From there, the Hornets mounted a furious comeback attempt with a 23-14 quarter, but the gap was too wide to overcome.

Junior Colin Fletcher and senior Luke Rothermel both finished in double-digits, with Fletcher finishing with 16 points and Rothermel adding 11. Junior Ethan Keane added 7, senior Jonathan Carl scored 4, junior Gideon Lawton chipped in three, and senior Marek Mascho and sophomores Kody Enck and Keegan VanZile added two points apiece.

Sophmore Griffin Morral rounded out the scoring with one point to go along with six rebounds and an assist.

Carl pulled down six rebounds and made a steal, Rothermel and freshman James Doughtie had 4 boards each, Lawton made 2 assists, and Fletcher had 2 rebounds and blocked a shot.

Hobday finished with 18 points to lead Athens.

Athens won the JV game 42-39, handing the Hornets their first loss of the season. VanZile and Doughtie both scored 10 points to lead Wellsboro.

Wellsboro is back in action Wednesday at Wyalusing.
