A pair of goals by senior Jonathan Carl propelled the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team to a 3-1 non-league, season-opening win over Jersey Shore on Monday.
"The boys got of to a quick start and gave themselves a bit of breathing room before Jersey Shore scored," head coach Todd Fitch said. "We still have work to do, but they held off Jersey Shore's pressure in the second half and a win is always a nice way to start the season."
Carl struck just 50 seconds into the game off an assist from sophomore Gabe Cuneo. Carl later scored midway through the opening period on an unassisted goal that deflected off the Bulldogs' goalie and into the net. Senior David Seeling scored the third goal with 18:22 remaining.
Jersey Shore scored with 13:58 remaining in the first period, cutting the score to 3-1, but Wellsboro's defense didn't allow another goal.
Both teams took seven shots on goal and had 5 corner kicks apiece. Senior Camden Tom recorded 5 saves in goal.
In the JV game Wellsboro rolled to a 7-0 win.
Sophomore Connor Hartman scored a pair of goals and had an assist, freshman Liam Stevens had a hat trick and an assist, sophomore Xavier Lecker had a pair of goals, and freshman Brayden Baldwin had an assist.
Wellsboro (1-0) travel to Galeton Wednesday.
