Shikellamy used a 7-run 3rd inning, then fended off a late rally by the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team to hang on for a 10-6 win at Bloomsburg High School Saturday afternoon.

"Tough day at the ballpark today," commented head coach Kyle Smith. "Although we had an early lead, we weren't able answer a Shikellamy rally and ran out of time to make a comeback."

The Hornets scored early to take the lead as sophomore Coen Tennis hit a grounder to short to score senior Gabe Sprouse. The Braves rallied with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead, then added a solo run in the second before scoring seven in the 3rd to increase their lead to 10-1 heading into the 4th.

Facing an early ending the Hornets put on their rally caps and attempted to make a comeback in the top of the 5th. A line drive single by freshman Gabe Cuneo scored senior Dustin Owlett then Cuneo scored on a pop fly from junior Cameron Owlett. The two runs cut the lead down to 10-3. Senior Ryder Bowen scored in the 4th on a sac fly by sophomore Syler Pietrzyk to cut it down to 10-4.

In the 7th a base hit from senior Alec Magli scored sophomore Max Mascho to cut the lead in half with two outs. Then, junior Marek Mascho singled in the next at bat to score Magli before the Hornets' luck ran out in the next at bat.

Max Mascho led the Hornets at the plate, going 2-for-3. Magli, Marek Mascho, Tennis, Bowen, Dustin Owlett, Cuneo, and Cameron Owlett added the rest of the Hornets' 9 hits. Magli, Marek Mascho, Pietrzyk, Cuneo and Cameron Owlett drove in Wellsboro's runs.

Junior Dylan Copp was credited with the loss in 2 innings of work, allowing 5 runs on 3 hits with 3 walks. Sprouse (2 innings), Dustin Owlett, and Pietrzyk (2 innings) also saw time on the mound, combining for 4 hits, 7 walks and two strikeouts.

Charlie Walter led the Braves, both at the plate and on the mound, for the win. He went 3-for-3 at the plate with 4 RBIs and scored 2 runs. He pitched 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts.

Shikellamy also won the JV game, 7-3. Wellsboro led 1-0 after the top of the 4th, only to have the Braves score 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning. Both teams scored 3 runs apiece in the 5th, and Shikellamy added one more in the 6th to hang on for the win. Freshman Reed Richardson went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs to lead the Hornets at the plate. The loss puts the JV team's record at 2-3-1 for the season.

Wellsboro now stands at 8-9 following the loss. They are back on the road this afternoon against NTL Large School Division foe Athens.
