LIBERTY - Canton jumped out early and held on late to beat NP-Liberty, 46-41, to claim the NPL Tournament title Saturday.

"We've been going to that tournament for a number of years now, and I'm not sure if we've ever won the title, so it feels good to finally come out on top," said Canton coach Ryan Van Noy. "I'm just really proud of the girls, and glad to see all their hard work paying off."

Cailyn VanNoy was named the MVP, with Stella Rockwell and Danah Wesneski making the All-Tournament team.

The Warriors led 19-9 after one but a 14-point second quarter from NPL cut it to 29-23 at the half.

The Mounties made it a 3-point game going into the fourth, but the Warriors held them to just six points in the frame to get the win.

Rockwell had 16 points on 6-for-13 shooting to go with two steals for Canton, as Van Noy added 10 points and two steals.

Wesneski also had 10 points and two steals, with Daveian Crowley getting six points, and six boards. Alexis McRoberts chipped in with four points, seven boards, and four steals.

"We had three girls score in double digits tonight, and that is something we've struggled with in the past," coach Van Noy said. "Stella Rockwell and Danah Wesneski both stepped up big time tonight, and did what I believe they could do all along. They knocked a lot of shots down for us in big time spots. Cailyn Did what Cailyn Does, and made plays at both ends of the floor. Daveian Crawley and Lex McRoberts did a great job rebounding, and defending. Chey Fitch is giving us good minutes as well."

Haley Litzelman had 20 points to lead NPL.

Canton hit seven field goals in the first quarter to build their 10 point lead. Wesneski had seven points to lead the Warriors with Van Noy getting six.

Rockwell had five points to lead the 10-point second quarter effort from Canton. She also five points in the third, with Van Noy scoring the other four.

In the final frame Rockwell had four points, with Crowley netting three.

"We still have lots to work on, but I'm happy with where we're at," Van Noy said. "We have two big tests this week with Wyalusing and Troy, we'll know where we stand after this week."

Canton (2-0) hosts Wyalusing on Wednesday.
