The Wellsboro Girls Soccer team made their second consecutive trip East on Route 6 this week. This time they swept the season series with Towanda, 4-1 Thursday.
"We dominated possession, moved the ball with purpose and made the right runs all night," head coach Michael Reese said. "An unlucky bounce put us down early, but our defense rose to the challenge and the girls stormed back with relentless energy and an outstanding team effort."
The Lady Knights took an early lead with a goal at 34:25, however the Lady Hornets fought back to tie the game, plus added three more goals.
Junior Ella Boyce scoring the game-tying goal with 14:32 remaining in the half, then struck two minutes later to put the Lady Hornets in front, 2-1. They held that lead until seven minutes into the second half when freshman Haylie Smith scored back-to-back goals. Her first with 33:20 remaining, and the second with 30:55 left to go.
Sophomore Kate Bryant assisted on Boyce's first goal and Smith's first goal. Senior Emily Benjamin assisted on Boyce's second goal, and Boyce assisted on Smith's first goal.
Junior Jadyn Dunlap made 4 saves in goal.
Wellsboro out shot Towanda 9-5 on the evening and had a slight 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 8-4 (7-3 NTL). The team is back in action Saturday morning against Jersey Shore.
