The Wellsboro Girls Soccer team ended a 23-game losing streak in their last 24 games (1-1 draw on September 16, 2020) to the Athens as they shut out the host Lady Wildcats 2-0 on Tuesday evening.
"I'm so proud of the way our girls played tonight," first year head coach Michael Reese said after the game. "The defense was outstanding from start to finish, and the energy never dropped. Haylie's goal off Kate's assist and then Kate's corner kick were big moments, but what I'll remember most is the hustle and pressure we showed as a team. This was a complete team win, and one that's been a long time coming."
Freshman Haylie Smith scored the Lady Hornets' first goal of the season with 25:04 remaining off an assist from sophomore Kate Bryant, putting Wellsboro up 1-0. Bryant later scored in the 2nd half off a corner kick with 8:13 left to play.
Athens out shot Wellsboro 11-8 and edged the Lady Hornets 5-3 in corner kicks.
Junior Jadyn Dunlap made 11 saves in goal to earn her first shut out of the season.
Wellsboro and Athens battled to a 0-0 draw in the JV game with junior Kaelyn Peterson (3) and senior Emily Benjamin (5) combining to record 8 saves in goal.
Wellsboro (1-0, 1-0 NTL) hosts rival North Penn-Mansfield Thursday.
