The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team avenged an earlier season loss to Athens, defeating them 8-5 on Sunday afternoon on the road.
The win evens the Hornets' record back up at .500 (9-9, 8-5 NTL Large School Division) to keep them in the District IV Class 3A playoff hunt.
"Today we were able to overcome 5 errors and win a big baseball game against a playoff team," said head coach Kyle Smith. "The bottom of our lineup came through today in key spots and we settled in defensively as the game moved along. It says a lot about the character of our team to respond to the rough start. We have plenty to be proud of today, but there is more work to do this week."
Athens started off the game with a run in the bottom of the 1st to take the early lead, however the Hornets plated 4 runs in the top of the 2nd.
A base hit from senior Dustin Owlett sophomore Coen Tennis to tie the game up, Next at bat sophomore Max Mascho singled to score senior Ryder Bowen, then another single from senior Gabe Sprouse scored Owlett and freshman Gabe Cuneo, making the score 4-1.
Athens scored three runs in the bottom of the 3rd to tie the game up, but again Wellsboro answered and outscored the Wildcats 4-1over the next three innings.
In the 4th a double from Mascho scored Guneo to break the tie, then another double from senior Alec Magli scored Mascho to make it 6-4. Junior Cameron Owlett scored Wellsboro's final run of the inning on a passed ball during junior Marek Mascho's at bat to increase the lead to 7-4.
Athens scored their final run in the bottom of the 4th to make it a 2-run game, however a Max Mascho single in the top of the 5th brought home another run from Cuneo, making it 8-5.
The Hornets kept Athens scoreless over the final two innings to hold on for the win.
Cuneo and Max Mascho both had 3 hits to lead Wellsboro at the plate. Cuneo went 3-for-3 with a walk and scored 3 runs while Mascho was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs and run scored. Tennis finished 2-for-4 and Magli, Sprouse, Dustin Owlett, and Cameron Owlett made up the remaining 12 hits. Sprouse (2), Magli, and Dustin Owlett also drove in runs.
Max Mascho got the win on the mound, throwing 4 & 1/3 innings allowing 1 run with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. Marek Mascho threw the final 2 & 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 3 hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Connor Davidson, Brady Flynn, and Dylan Saxon had the Wildcats' three hits on the afternoon. Duncan Thetga pitched six innings in a losing effort, allowing 8 runs on 11 hits with 9 strikeouts.
Wellsboro hosts Williamson this afternoon for Senior Night.
