Hornets Drop Road Finale To Towanda

The Wellsboro Boys Basketball team struggled offensively in their final road contest of the season, falling 56-27 to Towanda on Friday, February 7.

The Hornets made just 12 shots from the floor the entire game and were held to single digit points in three of the game's four quarters.

The Black Knights led 14-5 after the opening quarter, however the Hornets outscored Towanda 11-8 in the 2nd quarter to pull with six points, 22-16, as both teams entered their respective locker rooms.

The 2nd half, however was all Black Knights.

Towanda came out of the intermission and put a 20-point cushion between themselves and Wellsboro. Towanda's defense held Wellsboro to just two points, a basket by freshman Griffin Morral, while going on a 22-2 run. Towanda led 44-18 heading into the final quarter, which they outscored the Hornets 12-9.

Juniors Marek Mascho and Jonathan Carlled Wellsboro with 8 points apiece on the evening while senior Mitchel Lechler finished with 5 points. Morral hit one more shot in the 4th quarter to finish with 4 points. Fellow freshman Ransom Schultz rounded out the scoring with 2 points. He also grabbed a rebound.

Carl added 6 boards to his point total, junior Luke Rothermel had 5 rebounds and 3 steals, sophomore Colin Fletcher had 2 assists and Lechler added 2 steals.

Darrius Farrell and Boom Thompson led Towanda with 9 points apiece.

Towanda won the JV game 55-37. Freshman Kody Enck had 11 to lead the team while freshman RJ Doughtie chipped in 8 points.

The loss drops the Hornets back under .500 at 10-11. They also finish their NTL Large School campaign at 9-7. The team is back in action Monday night for their final regular season game, with a berth in the District IV Class 3A playoffs on the line, against Central Columbia.
