Freshman Adelyn Frantz struck out 16 Cowanesque Valley hitters to tie the Wellsboro Varsity Softball team's single-game record in a 5-3 win over the Lady Indians on Friday, April 25.
Frantz becomes the third Lady Hornet to strike out 16 in a single game, tying the record set by Brooke Kohler (2013) against Canton) and Karli Spencer (2010 against Galeton). She allowed 3 runs on 3 hits and walked 4 in the game for her 3rd win of the season.
After a scoreless 1st inning the Lady Hornets plated two runs in the 2nd as freshmen Delaney Morral and Kaylee Frazier both scored on a double by junior Harleigh Clevelan to put Wellsboro up 2-0. Wellsboro added a run in the 3rd as Frantz led off the inning with a base hit, then later scored on a sac fly by freshman Teagan Novinger to push the lead to 3-0.
CV cut the lead down to 3-1 with a run in the 4th, however Wellsboro struck again in the 5th as Cleveland was hit by a pitch to start the inning. She later scored to make it 4-1.
Wellsboro scored once more in the top of the 5th as Frantz doubled and scored to give Wellsboro a 5-1 lead. The Lady Indians again cut in the Lady Hornets' led with 2 runs to cut the lad down to 5-3. Before they could do any more damage Wellsboro's defense ended the game on a double play to secure their 4th win of the season.
Frantz led Wellsboro, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. She also stole two bases. Frazier and Cleveland accounted for the remaining 2 of the Lady Hornets' 4 hits in the game.
Raegan Watson was also 2-for-4 with a double to lead CV. Lilah LaBarron pitched a complete game for the Lady Indians, allowing 5 runs on 4 hits with 4 walks and 10 strikeouts.
Wellsboro (4-7, 3-7 NTL Large School Division) travels to Athens on Tuesday.
