Young Lady Hornets Split With Canton

The Wellsboro Junior High Softball team split a doubleheader with Canton to pick up their 2nd win of the season on Monday, April 22.

Wellsboro took the first game 11-5 and were edged 11-10 in the second game.

In game one Canton struck first with a run in the top of the 1st, however the Lady Hornets quickly rallied with 6 runs in the bottom half of the inning. Wellsboro added another run in the bottom of the 2nd to lead 7-1.

Canton added 3 runs in the top of the 3rd and their final run in the top of the 5th, but Wellsboro scored 4 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd.

Adelyn Frantz and Genevieve Fleming were both 3-for-3 at the plate, Haylie Smith was 2-for-2, Hannah Taylor was 2-for-4, Delaney Morral finished 1-for-3 and Teagan Novinger was 1-for-1 and drew two walks. Frantz scored 3 runs and drove in 3 runs, Fleming drove in 2 runs and scored once, Smith scored twice and had 2 RBIs, and Taylor scored twice. Morral, Novinger, and Kaylee Frazier also scored solo runs.

Frantz pitched three innings, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts. Smith came on in relief, allowing 1 run on 4 hits with a strikeout.

In the second game Wellsboro jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first but the Lady Warriors answered back it the bottom half of the inning with 4 runs. Wellsboro added 1 in the 2nd, but again the Warriors came ready at the plate, adding 5 more runs to push their lead to 9-3. Wellsboro outscored Canton 2-1 in the third to cut the lead in half (10-5), then added 5 runs to knot the game at 10-all in the top of the 4th. Canton scored once in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.

Isabella Dean led Wellsboro at the plate, going 2-for-2 and scoring 2 runs. Fleming finished 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. Cabella Hazelton, Zoey Roosa, Paityn Biery, Paige Browning, Maddison Grabowski, and Ava Wood all scored individual runs.

Browning pitched one & 2/3 innings, allowing 9 runs on 3 hits with 7 walks and 3 strikeouts. Fleming also threw one and a third innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits with a walk and 4 strikeouts.

Wellsboro (2-4) travels to Northeast Bradford Thursday.
