The Wellsboro Girls Varsity Soccer team snapped a six-game winless skid after defeating Port Allegany 3-1 on Monday, October 7.
Wellsboro opened the scoring with 18:33 remaining in the opening half as sophomore Ella Boyce scored unassisted to give the team the early lead. The score remained 1-0 in favor of Wellsboro until the Lady Gators scored just under two minutes into the game to tie it up.
However, Wellsboro added a pair of goals in the second half to secure the win.
Freshman Kate Bryant broke the tie with 18:44 left to play off a throw in from junior Lilah Paredes. Then, with 17:16 left, freshman Luna Moyer scored after senior Cassidy Mitchell headed the ball into the box, where Moyer finished with the goal.
Wellsboro out shot Port Allegany 12-7 and had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Jadyn Dunlap made 6 saves in goal for Wellsboro.
"The Hornets played well last night," said head coach Jason Gehman. "Ella Boyce turned a clearance kick from the CB into an over-the-keeper first goal. Two freshman, Kate Bryant and Luna Moyer, each had run-through relentless crashing and found the back of the net. The team did very well in possessing the ball much of the match. I'm proud of their effort and coachability!"
Wellsboro also won the JV game, 2-1 on a pair of goals by Rosa Sguera.
The win improves Wellsboro to 3-7-2 (2-6-2 NTL). The team hosts rival North Penn-Mansfield on Wednesday for Senior Night.
