Second Quarter Surge Leads Lady Wildcats Past Wellsboro

A 14-point 2nd quarter by Athens started a 2nd half ran to break open a one-point game and defeat the Wellsboro Lady Hornets 48-42 on Saturday, January 13.

The Lady Hornets led early as they outscored the Lady Wildcats 15-7 behind 5 points each from juniors Chloe Brandenburg and Paige Logsdon. However, Athens went on a 14-7 run in the 2nd quarter to make it a one-point, 22-21 lead in favor of Wellsboro, at halftime.

Athens posted 15 points in the 3rd quarter to take the lead at 36-32 heading into the final frame. Athens again outscored Wellsboro 12-10 over the final quarter to hold on for the six-point win.

Brandenburg led all scorers with 23 points, hitting 5 three-pointers in the game for the second time this season. Senior Maddy Mascho scored 7 points, senior Emily Morris added 6 points, and senior Emily Richardson rounded out the scoring with a point.

Abby Burgess (19) and Addy Wheeler (16) led Athens on the evening.

Athens won the JV game 15-12. Wagner led Wellsboro with 6 points while freshman Elizabeth Ferero and senior Hannah Gilmour scored 3 points each.

The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 3-7 (2-6 NTL Large School Division). The team is back on the court Monday at Sayre.
