A 19-point 2nd quarter propelled Troy past Wellsboro 61-37 to give them the NTL Large School Division crown on Wednesday, February 7.
"We were down 15 at the half and missed some good scoring opportunities," head coach Darrell Morris said. "We won the third and actually had the game to 10 points late in the 3rd. We tried to pressure more defensively in the 4th to get the game closer and that is when Troy really hurt us. The score is not indicative of the heart and guts our girls played with tonight."
Troy held a 12-6 lead after the first quarter then proceeded to bust things open with 19 points in the 2nd. Wellsboro outscored Troy 11-8 in the 3rd to make up a little ground, but still trailed 39-27 heading into the fourth. Troy saved the best quarter for last, outscoring the Lady Hornets 22-10.
Juniors Chloe Brandenburg and Paige Logsdon led Wellsboro with 15 points and 10 points, respectively, while seniors Maddy Mascho, Emily Morris, and Emily Richardson had 4 points apiece.
Gloria Andrews led Troy, and all scorers, with 21 points and Kailyn Sterling finished with 17.
There was no JV game.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 8-12 (6-10 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action for the final time in the regular season at Wyalusing on Friday.
