The Wellsboro Varsity Wrestling team picked up two pin falls and three forfeits in a 45-30 loss to rival North Penn-Liberty on Thursday, January 4.
North Penn-Liberty opened the match with four consecutive wins to pull ahead 24-0 until freshman Wyatt Kilburn scored a 3:26 pin over Brady Bower at 139 lbs. to put the Hornets on the scoreboard. The Mounties then picked up back-to-back victories at 145 and 152 lbs. by Riley Oakes and Gabriel Bellows before junior Jacob Dean pinned Ryan Roupp in 52 seconds at 160 lbs.
At 172 lbs. North Penn-Liberty's Easton Cleveland-Pequignot pulled out a 6-4 decision in the overtime tiebreaker round over junior Ryder Bowen to make it 39-12. Junior Evan Ingerick, freshman Cooper Jones, and sophomore Hayden Stevens won Wellsboro's final three matches by forfeit.
The loss drops the Hornets to 4-10 (0-5 NTL).
In the Junior High contest the Hornets won 42-36 to improve to 3-1 on the year. Mason Greene, Vincent Arena, Carter Pettingill, Gavin Carson, Lance Starkweather, Logan Stevens, and Dennis McIntyre scored wins for the Hornets.
