The Wellsboro Boys Basketball team kicked off their season at home against the defending District IV Class 3A champion Loyalsock Lancers on Friday, December 6, falling 46-29.
The Hornets trailed 9-5 after the first quarter and were held to just four total points in the 2nd to trail 15-9 at halftime. The Lancers outscored Wellsboro 18-12 in the 3rd and then 13-8 in the 4th.
Senior Mitchel Lechler led the team with 15 points, hitting 5 three-point shots. Junior Luke Rothermel added 8 points and junior Jonathan Carl chipped in with 6. Rothermel added 5 boards, Lecher and junior Marek Mascho pulled down 3 each, while Mascho added 3 assists, and senior Lucas Cuneo 3 rebounds and 2 assists.
Wellsboro turned the ball over 14 times.
Jalil Coates had a game-high 16 points for Loyalsock.
In the JV game the Hornets fell 59-51 to the Lancers. Sophomore Colin Fletcher had 26 points for the Hornets while freshman Ransom Schultz and sophomore Gideon Lawton added 10 points each.
Wellsboro (0-1) travels to Northeast Bradford on Tuesday.
