After two straight wins the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team dropped a road doubleheader at Troy on Thursday, April 18.

Troy took both games 12-2 in 5 innings.

In the first game the Hornets jumped out to an early lead as senior Caden Smith led off with a double, then advanced to third as sophomore Marek Mascho singled. A walk by junior Gabe Sprouse loaded the bases and Smith finally scored as junior Ryder Bowen reached 1st on an error. The Hornets' lead didn't last long, however, as the Trojans added 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning, and outscored the Hornets 9-0 over the next three innings before Wellsboro added their 2nd run in the top of the 5th.

In the 5th the Hornets led off with back-to-back singles by Mascho and sophomore Cameron Owlett. Mascho would cross home plate on a RBI-ground out by junior Alec Magli.

Troy scored their final three runs in the bottom half of the inning to enact the 10-run rule.

Mascho finished 3-for-3 at the plate while Smith, Sprouse, Owlett, and junior Lucas Cuneo recorded solo hits. Freshman Max Mascho started and went 3 & 2/3 innings, allowing 9 runs (7 earned) on 9 hits with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. Magli came on in relief, surrendering 3 runs on 3 hits with a walk.

In game two Troy broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 3rd with a run, then added six runs in the 4th to lead 7-0 before the Hornets broke the shutout in the 5th.

Max Mascho led off the top of the 5th with a walk and Smith followed with a base hit, putting two men on. After Marek Mascho grounded out to the pitcher in the next at bat, Bowen brought both runners home on a double.

Troy finished the game with 5 runs in the bottom half of the inning to sweep the doubleheader.

Wellsboro had just 5 hits in the second game, one each coming from Smith, Mascho, Bowen, Magli, and Mascho. Marek Mascho threw four innings, allowing 7 runs on 9 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Bowen threw the final inning, giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits.

The loss drops the Hornets to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the NTL Large School Division. The team returns to action Saturday morning at Jersey Shore.
