In their first game in three weeks, the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team defeated Coudersport 12-4 in non-league play on Monday, April 15.

The Hornets got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first inning. Senior Caden Smith led off with a walk, sophomore Marek Mascho doubled and junior Gabe Sprouse singled. All three would score to put Wellsboro up 3-0 early. After a scoreless 2nd, the Hornets added four more runs by Marek and freshman Max Mascho, Sprouse, and junior Alec Magli to increase the lead to 7-0. Smith and Sprouse would later score in the top of the 4th to push the lead to 9-0 before the Falcons ended their scoring drought.

Coudersport scored twice in the 5th to cut the lead to 9-2 then added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 7th, after Wellsboro scored three more of their own in the top half of the inning. Freshman Coen Tennis, sophomore Drayden McGee and Smith all crossed home plate for the Hornets in the top of the 7th.

"We're happy to play another game and the team performed well in all aspects of the game," 1st year head coach Kyle Smith said. "We had solid pitching, hitting and defense, which is typically a recipe for success. Getting contributions throughout the lineup was another plus. We are looking forward to another challenge tomorrow."

Marek Mascho led Wellsboro at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs. Smith was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, Sprouse and Magli were both 2-for-4, and juniors Ryder Bowen and Lucas Cuneo were both 1-for-4.

Sprouse started and got the victory in 5 innings worth of work. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks. McGee threw one and a third innings, allowing 1 run on 1 hit with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks. Magli threw the final two-thirds of an inning, allowing a run on 1 hit and a walk.

Wellsboro evens up their record at 1-1 (0-1 NTL Large School Division). They host Cowanesque Valley this afternoon.
