The Wellsboro Varsity Wrestling team scored four forfeits to edge Coudersport 24-21 on the road on Thursday, February 1 for their 6th win of the season and 2nd of the week.
The Hornets won forfeits at 127, 139, 160 and 189 lbs. by sophomore Mason Nowak, freshman Wyatt Kilburn, juniors Jacob Dean and Evan Ingerick.
At 172 lbs. the Falcons' John Wright won a 3-2 decision over junior Ryder Bowen. While it goes down as a loss in the books, it actually helped the Hornets hold on to the win as both teams won four matches each. After a scoreless first period Bowen scored a one-point escape with 15 seconds remaining in the 2nd to take the lead. Wright tied it at 1-1 in the 3rd, then scored a takedown to go up 3-1. Bowen got back to his feet for the escape to make it 3-2, but couldn't get a shot in before time expired.
"We wrestled tough as a group. I thought everyone put forth a good effort," said head coach Bryce Bitner. "While Coudersport may not have many wrestlers, they have some very talented kids that are well coached. I think we’re making some good strides and have a long week next week wrestling 4 dual meets before the Sectional Tournament. We’re hopeful our kids will step up next week and make some final improvements before the run begins."
There were no matches at 107, 114, 121, 133, and 145 lbs.
In the Junior High match the Hornets won 33-12, scoring six individual victories. Mason Greene (80), Taitt Webster (87), Hunter Carson (101), Owen Carson (130), and Austin DeShazo (138) all won by forfeit while Vincent Arena won a 7-6 decision over Poston Wolfel at 115 lbs.
Wellsboro is back on the mats on Tuesday at Jersey Shore.
