The Wellsboro Varsity Wrestling teams dropped a pair of matches to Sugar Valley Rural Charter during Senior Night on Wednesday, February 7.
Sugar Valley edged the Hornets 30-24 in the boys match and doubled up the Lady Hornets 24-12 in the girls match.
In the boys match Sugar Valley opened up with a forfeit at 107 lbs. for an early lead, but sophomore Mason Nowak tied the match up at 6-all with a forfeit at 127 lbs. However, the Phoenix rattled off three straight wins, two pins and a forfeit, at 139, 145, and 152 lbs. before junior Jacob Dean ended the run with a forfeit of his own at 160 lbs.
Wellsboro went on to claim four of the final five matches starting with Dean's forfeit. Junior Ryder Bowen won a 10-8 decision at 172 lbs. over Cayden Weaver, junior Evan Ingerick pinned Sam Goldsmith at 189 lbs. in 42 seconds, and sophomore Hayden Stevens won a 4-2 decision at 285 lbs. over Levi Galentine.
Sugar Valley's Brandon Galentine won via pin fall at 215 lbs. to claim the match.
In the girls match the Lady Hornets jumped out to an early lead as junior Megan Robbins pinned Evie Andrus in 1:57 at 124 lbs. Senior Olivia Chilson scored a 2:56 pin over Emma Downing at 142 lbs, however Sugar Valley took the other four matches, including three forfeits, for the victory.
In the Junior High match Sugar Valley edged Wellsboro, 45-42. Mason Greene, Taitt Webster, Owen Carson, Gavin Carson, Lance Starkweather, Logan Stevens, and Dennis McIntyre scored wins for the Hornets.
The loss drops the Varsity team to 6-18 on the year. They are back in action for the final time in the regular season tonight against Port Allegany.
