Senior Micaiah Fitch scored a hat trick while junior Camden Tom recorded a clean sheet to help the Wellsboro Boys Soccer team to a 5-0 shut out victory over South Williamsport on Saturday, August 31.
"I think we played our best game of the week today," head coach Todd Fitch said. "The boys possessed and moved the ball well. Defensively we stepped into passing lanes, were assertive to get the ball back when possession was lost, and Camden was strong coming off his line to control the box. In addition to scoring goals, the team has kept three clean sheets. A strong performance by the boys to end the week."
Fitch struck first with just under 25 minutes to play in the first period off an assist from senior Jack Bryant. Senior Lucas Cuneo scored unassisted with 6:22 remaining to give the Hornets a 2-0 advantage.
Fitch's second goal came with 32:12 remaining in the second. Senior Alex Citrino scored with 4:24 remaining to make it 4-0 in favor of Wellsboro before Fitch scored for the final time 22 seconds later.
Wellsboro took 18 shots on goal compared to South's 4, and had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Tom made two saves in goal.
Wellsboro also recorded a shut out in the JV game, winning 7-0. Sophomores Dylan Tomlinson (2) and Jacob Smith, and freshmen Octavian Wyman, Gabe Cuneo (2), Xavier Lecker all scored goals for the Hornets while Cuneo added a pair of assists.
The Hornets improve to 3-0 on the season, and have yet to allow a goal. The team is back in action on Tuesday at Athens.
