The Wellsboro Girls Soccer team shut out Port Allegany 3-0 on Saturday, September 9, to earn their first win of the season.
In their three previous games the Lady Hornets struggled to produce any offense. That wasn't the case against the Lady Gators as they produced their first goal not even 10 minutes into the game. Senior Sara Seeling fired a shot from 20 yards out off a pass from junior Cassidy Mitchell for the game's first goal with 31:32 remaining. Towards the end of the half senior Maddy Mascho converted a pass from Seeling to make it 2-nil in favor of Wellsboro.
Seeling scored the Lady Hornets' final goal of the day with 21:59 remaining to push the lead to 3-nil.
Freshman Jadyn Dunlap and Wellsboro's defense recorded a clean sheet, saving all three of Port Allegany's shot attempts.
Wellsboro also had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
"Our team played well this week, after some significant changes to position and structure," said head coach Jason Gehman. "Both of our veteran centerbacks are currently out for injury and we had to make some adjustments. We moved our team captains, Abby Owlett and Emily Richardson - both amazing senior players - from the midfield to our back line. In order to create a strong midfield, we brought Lilah Paredes and Sara Seeling into the midfield to partner with Cassidy Mitchell. We pulled our veteran keeper, Annie Gehman, out of goal and handed the reigns over to Jaydn Dunlap, who has done an exceptional job. While the ladies are working exceptionally hard on learning their new assignments, we were able to execute to some success on the pitch against Port Allegany."
The JV game ended in a scoreless tie.
Wellsboro (1-3, 0-2 NTL) is at Williamson on Monday.
