After dropping their season opening game to Montoursville, the Hornets rolled off their 2nd win of the week, defeating Sayre 55-42 on Friday, December 8.
Wellsboro held a slim, one-point, 11-10 lead after the opening quarter but used an 18-9 run in the second quarter to put some space between themselves and the Redskins to lead 29-19 at halftime. Sayre closed the game in the 3rd by outscoring the Hornets 10-8, however Wellsboro's offense produced 18 more points in the 4th quarter, while their defense held Sayre to 13, to secure their second straight win.
Senior Hayes Campbell continued his strong start to the season with his third straight double-digit scoring game, dropping 18 points and going 10-for-13 at the foul line. He also grabbed 8 rebounds. Senior Caden Smith added a new career-high 16 points and sophomore Luke Rothermel added 10 points. Junior Mitchel Lechler pitched in 7 points, sophomore Marek Mascho added 3 points, and senior Ian Hoose rounded out the scoring with a point. Lechler made 3 assists and a steal, Smith had 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks, and Mascho also made 3 assists and a steal.
Smith and Rothermel pulled down 5 rebounds apiece and Lechler grabbed 4 boards.
The Hornets (2-1, 2-0 NTL Large School Division) are back in action on Wednesday at home against Northeast Bradford.
