The Athens Lady Wildcats snapped a three-game win streak by Wellsboro in a 44-29 win on Friday, January 27.
Athens took an early 11-6 lead after the opening quarter and clung to that five-point lead after the second quarter to lead 17-12.
The third quarter is where the Lady Wildcats did their damage, however, as they outscored the Lady Hornets 17-8 to open up a 31-20 lead heading into the final frame. Athens would go on to outscore Wellsboro 13-9 over the final 8 minutes to pick up the win.
Sophomore Chloe Brandenburg led the Lady Hornets with 10 points in the game while fellow sophomore Paige Logsdon added 8. Juniors Maddy Mascho and Emily Richardson added 5 points apiece and senior Hailie Kerr rounded out the scoring with a point.
Logsdon added 7 rebounds, Mascho finished with 4 assists and 3 steals, and Richardson and Kerr both pulled down 4 rebounds.
Karlee Bartlow (12) and Addy Wheeler (10) led Athens on the evening.
Athens swept the evening, winning the JV game 24-18. Brandenburg had 7 for Wellsboro and Richardson added 5.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 6-9 (6-4 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action next Wednesday, February 1 against Towanda.
