Wildcats hand Hornets third loss in four games

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team dropped their third of their past four games in a 48-40 loss to Athens on Friday, February 11.

"We are struggling on the offense side of the ball," said head coach Steve Adams. "We need to come back around."

Athens doubled up the Hornets 15-7 after the first quarter and never looked back as they leapfrogged Wellsboro in the NTL Large School Division standings (11-2) in their 14th win of the year. The Wildcats led 27-15 at halftime and 35-26 after the third quarter.

JJ Babcock dropped 15 points to surpass the 1,000 point plateau for his career while Nalen Carling led all scorers on the night with 19.

Junior Conner Adams led Wellsboro with 14 points, senior Liam Manning and junior Peyton McClure both finished with 8, senior Drew Manning added 5, junior Cameron Brought had 3, and senior Darryn Callahan rounded out the scoring with two points. Callahan had 8 rebounds, Liam Manning grabbed 7 boards, while Brought and Drew Manning had 5 rebounds each. Adams added 3 assists and 3 rebounds.

In the JV game the Hornets lost 40-23. Sophomores Caden Smith and Carter Knowlton scored 7 points each.

The loss drops the Hornets' record to 14-5 (11-3 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action later this afternoon as they travel to North Penn-Mansfield.
