An early lead for the Wellsboro Varsity Softball team faded in a 14-4 loss to rival North Penn-Liberty on Friday, April 29.
After a scoreless 1st inning the Lady Hornets scored twice in the 2nd inning. Senior Abbye Cavanaugh doubled to center to score senior Emma Coolidge, who led off with a base hit. The next at bat sophomore Abby Owlett grounded out to second base to score junior Madaline Bordas. Wellsboro would hold the lead until the bottom of the third when the Lady Mounties plated 4 runs to take the lead.
North Penn-Liberty outscored the Lady Hornets 14-2 in the final 3 innings to complete the season sweep. Wellsboro's two remaining runs, one in the 4th and one in the 6th, were scored by Bordas and Coolidge. Bordas hit a solo home run to center in the 4th and Coolidge hit her own solo shot to left in the 6th.
The Lady Hornets had 5 hits on the afternoon, two each by Bordas and Coolidge, and one by Cavanaugh. Junior Rylie Boyce and freshman Alexandra Urena split time in the circle. Urena started, and was credited for the loss, giving up 6 runs (4 earned) on 4 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts in 3 innings. Boyce pitched the remaining 2 & 2/3 innings, allowing 8 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits with 4 walks.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 4-10 (2-8 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action on Tuesday, May 3 against Athens.
