The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team's struggles continued as they fell 51-32 to St. John Neumann on Thursday, December 29.
The Lady Hornets have dropped six of their last seven games since opening the season with a win over rival North Penn-Mansfield.
Wellsboro started off by scoring the game's first point but Neumann won the opening quarter 12-7. The Lady Knights extended their lead to seven points in the second but Wellsboro cut the lead down to three on a foul shot by junior Olivia Chilson and a three by sophomore Chloe Brandenburg before SJNRA brought the lead back to 14 points at halftime. Wellsboro again fought to get the lead back to seven with under four minutes to play in the third, but again Neumann pushed the lead back to 10 heading into the final frame.
In the 4th the Lady Knights went on a 16-7 run, holding Wellsboro to just two points until the final minutes.
Sophmore Paige Logsdon led the Lady Hornets with 13 points and 8 rebounds, Brandenburg finished with 8 points, and senior Ella Posada had 3 points. Senior Molly Ingerick and juniors Emily Richardson and Hannah Gilmour added 2 points each and junior Maddy Mascho and Chilson chipped in a point. Posada added 5 boards, Brandenburg made 3 steals, and Chilson and senior Hailie Kerr each grabbed 5 rebounds.
Sheiana Tutler led all scorers with 19 points, Gigi Parlante finished with 13, and Elizabeth Weller added 7 for Neumann.
In the JV game St. John Neumann won a thriller, defeating the Lady Hornets 12-11. Mascho led Wellsboro with 4 points.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 2-6 (2-2 NTL Large School Division) on the year. The team is back in action, and returns to league play, on Wednesday, January 4 against Williamson.
