The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team suffered their fourth straight loss in a 40-30 tilt to Athens on Friday, January 7.
The Lady Wildcats had a slim two-point, 10-8, lead after the opening quarter, but padded their lead in the second by outscoring the Lady Hornets 14-6 to take a 24-14 lead into halftime. Athens increased their lead to 12 after the third, and held on to beat Wellsboro by 10.
"The girls battled all game long," head coach John Davis said. "We got down early, but the girls kept their composure and played even with them the second half."
Freshman Paige Logsdon led the Lady Hornets with 12 points, senior Emma Coolidge had 9 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals, junior Ella Posada pitched in 5, and junior Molly Ingerick and freshman Chloe Brandenburg scored 2 points each. Logsdon also grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Karlee Bartlow led all scorers with 16 points on the evening.
Wellsboro started off the evening with a 14-11 win in the JV game. Sophomores Emily Morris and Olivia Chilson led Wellsboro with 4 points each.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets' record to 4-5 (3-2 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action on Tuesday, January 11 against Towanda.
