The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team defeated Athens 2-1 to win their 3rd NTL Championship on Thursday, October 12.
The win sweeps the season series with the Wildcats and also caps an undefeated league season at 12-0.
"The boys are NTL champions and tonight was a milestone conclusion to league play this season," head coach Todd Fitch said following the game.
The Wildcats took the first lead of the game on a goal off a direct kick right in front of the box with 19 minutes remaining in the first half. The held that lead until the Hornets tied the game right before the half expired on a goal by senior Jack Poirier, assisted by sophomore Jack Bryant.
Wellsboro later took the lead midway through the second half as Poirier assisted senior Sam Rudy.
The Hornets took 11 shots on goal while the Wildcats took 8. Wellsboro also had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior Aiden Gehman recorded 2 saves while junior Mitchell Butler made 1 stop in goal.
The JV game ended in a scoreless tie.
The win improves the Hornets to 14-2 and wraps up their undefeated league season at 12-0. Next up for Wellsboro are a pair of non-league games. First, the Hornets host Hughesville next Tuesday before finishing up the regular season on the 22nd at Selinsgrove.
