The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams split a pair of games on the road at Williamson on Thursday, March 11.
The Wellsboro Boys Junior High Basketball team defeated Williamson 38-27. The Hornets started fast and jumped out to a 16-5 first quarter lead and extended that lead for a 26-8 halftime advantage. Both teams scored 7 third quarter points and the Hornets led 33-15 after three quarters. Williamson made a run in the fourth quarter to keep the pressure on, but the Hornets held on for the victory.
"Our fast start was the difference in the game tonight," said coach Kyle Smith. "We were able to generate a lot of first quarter turnovers, which allowed us to build a lead. The boys played with great energy and we were very happy with their effort."
Micaiah Fitch scored 14 points to lead all scorers in the game, EJ Keck scored 8 points, Mitchel Lechler scored 7 points, Micah Vickery added 5 points and Drayden McGee added 4.
Wellsboro won the B game 31-22. Luke Rothermel scored 10 points, Drayden McGee scored 5 points, Owen Stevens added 4 points, Jonathan Carl scored 4 points, Noah Zengerle scored 3 points, Payton Yawger scored 2 points, Jonathan Baldwin scored 2 points and Marek Mascho added 1 point.
In the girls game the Lady Horents lost to Williamson 30-35. Paige Logsdon had 7 points and 13 rebounds, Chloe Brandenburg had 11 points and 2 assists, Raegan Watkins-Bourret had 2 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists, and LeAnna Fuentes had 10 points and 3 rebounds.
"This was another tough loss," coach Janelle Tombs said. "We controlled rebounds in the first half but we just could not catch any breaks. I was pleased with the girls as they played to the end."
In the B Team game Wellsboro won 17-9. Megan Robbins had 7 points, Kendal Hastings had 2 points, Alyssa Chilson had 6 points, and Jordan Rumsey had 2 points.
Both teams return to action tomorrow morning at Cowanesque Valley.
