In their first league game of the season the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team defeated Cowanesque Valley 58-35 on Wednesday, December 15.
The Lady Hornets took a commanding lead right from the opening tip-off, outscoring the host Lady Indians 17-4, and never looked back. Cowanesque cut Wellsboro's lead to 27-16 at the half with a 12-10 2nd quarter, but Wellsboro's defense held them to just 7 points in the third quarter, while they scored 15 to push the lead to 42-23 heading into the final frame.
Senior Emma Coolidge led all scorers on the night with 17 points. Freshmen Chloe Brandenburg and Paige Logsdon also finished in double-digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Senior Emma Brandenburg had 8 points and juniors Ella Posada and Molly Ingerick, and sophomore Maddy Mascho, all added 4 points each.
Ella Churchill led Cowanesque with Valley with 10 points.
Wellsboro fell 28-10 in the JV game. Sophomore Emily Morris led Wellsboro with 4 points.
The win improves the Lady Hornets to 2-0 on the young season, and 1-0 in the NTL Large School Division standings. The team is back in action on Friday, December 17 against North Penn-Liberty.
