Lady Hornets fall to South Williamsport

The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Soccer team started off the 2021 season with a 3-0 loss to South Williamsport at home on Saturday, September 4.

The game was scoreless until the 36th minute when South Williamsport's Payden Matthieson found the back of the net to give the Mounties the lead. The Lady Mounties then added two more goals in the 2nd half. Their second goal came in the 3rd minute of the second half by South's Sophia Casella, then Abby Akers scored South Wiliamsport's 3rd goal with under 7 minutes left to play.

South Williamsport out shot Wellsboro 23-1 and had 6 corner kicks to Wellsboro's one.

Senior Lilly Abadi had 18 saves in goal for the Lady Hornets while sophomore Maddy Mascho took the team's only shot.

South Williamsport also took the JV game by the same score, 3-0. Freshman Annie Gehman made 10 saves.

The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 0-1 to start the season. Wellsboro begins Northern Tier League play on Wednesday as they host rival North Penn-Mansfield.
