The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team suffered a 50-33 loss to Athens on Saturday, January 11.
"This game was much closer than the final score indicated," coach Maureen Poirier said. "We were only 4 points down 2 minutes into the 4th quarter against a experienced, talented team. A few defensive break downs and fouls led to Athens pulling away in the final mutes of the game. The girls played two strong quarters and have to get to where they can play 4 strong quarters."
After trailing 20-8 at halftime Wellsboro went on a 19-13 run to cur the Lady Wildcats' lead to 33-27. Athens outscored Wellsboro 17-6 in the fourth.
Senior Cathryn Brought led Wellsboro with 19 points. Junior Bailey Monks had 8 points, freshman Jordyn Abernathy scored 4, and sophomore Emma Coolidge added 2 points. Monks also added 5 rebounds.
Wellsboro held on to win the JV game 21-20. Sophomore Emma Brandenburg led the way with 8 points and sophomore Abbye Cavanaugh had 7.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 4-5 (4-3 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Tuesday, January 14 as they host Towanda.
