The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team had a two-game win streak snapped as they lost a 38-37 heartbreaker to Canton on Tuesday, January 7.
The Lady Hornets held a five-point, 13-8, lead after the first quarter. Canton closed the gap to three points as the half ended as they edged Wellsboro 12-10 in the quarter to trail 23-20.
Canton again outscored Wellsboro in the third quarter and took a 30-29 lead heading into the final frame. Each team managed 8 points over the final 8 minutes as Canton held on for the one-point win.
Senior Cathryn Brought led Wellsboro with 12 points, junior Bailey Monks had 10, and sophomore Emma Coolidge added 9. Junior Kiyah Boyce, sophomore Emma Brandenburg, and freshman Jordyn Abernathy all scored 2 points each.
Reagan Kelly (16) and Elle Binford (15) paced the Lady Warriors on the evening while Aislyn Williams contributed 5 points and Courtney Weiskoff had 2 points.
Wellsboro won the JV game 23-16 behind 10 points from Brandenburg and 5 from Rylie Boyce.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 3-4 (3-2 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Thursday, January 9 as they travel to Westfield to take on Cowanesque Valley.
