The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team won a pivotal 53-34 game at Wyalusing on Friday, February 1 to get back over .500 for the season.
"The girls came to play tonight," head coach Maureen Poirier said. "This was the best game the team has played defensively this year. It's great having seven girls score. The girls coming off the bench provided the team good minutes and made a difference tonight."
Led by a game-high 26 points from senior Emma Poirier, the Lady Hornets took an 11-10 lead after the first quarter and expanded it to 25-16 at halftime and 37-28 after the third quarter before outscoring the Lady Rams 16-6 in the fourth to run away with the game and pick up the win.
Poirier's 26 led all scorers on the night. Junior Cathryn Brought had 8 points, senior Heidi Zuchowski scored 7 points, senior Dani Hunt and sophomore Jena Boyce added 4 points each, junior Liza Manning pitched in 3 points and sophomore Bailey Monks added 1. Brought pulled down 9 rebounds, Poirier added 4 rebounds and 5 steals, and Boyce and Monks grabbed 6 rebounds each.
In the JV game the Lady Hornets pulled off a 40-37 overtime win to improve 7-7 overall. Freshman Lindsey Marmara led the way with 14 and sophomore Emma Coolidge scored 13.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' to 9-8 overall and 9-3 in the NTL Large School Division standings. The girls will be back in action on Monday, February 4 against Coudersport for a Varsity only contest.
