The Wellsboro Girls Basketball team scored their first win of the 2019 season by beating Sayre 48-31 on Wednesday, December 11.
The Lady Hornets had a 7-3 lead after the first quarter but the Lady Redskins went on to outscore Wellsboro by a point, 11-10, in the second to cut the lead to 17-15 at halftime. Wellsboro began to pull away as the third quarter got under way and outscored Sayre 15-7 to extend their lead to 32-21 heading into the final quarter.
Wellsboro went on to outscore Sayre 16-10 over the final eight minutes.
Senior Cathryn Brought and sophomore Emma Coolidge both scored 10 points to lead the Lady Hornets. Juniors Bailey Monks and Kiyah Boyce added 8 points each, sophomore Abbye Cavanaugh pitched in 6, freshman Jordyn Abernathy scored 4, and sophomore Emma Brandenburg rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
Coolidge had 7 rebounds and 3 steals, Brought added 6 rebounds and 4 assists, Monks had 6 rebounds, and Boyce added 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 1-2 (1-0 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Tuesday, December 17 at rival North Penn-Mansfield.
