Two first half goals pushed the Sayre Girls Soccer team past Wellsboro in the Lady Hornets' season opener on Tuesday, September 4.
The Lady Redskins scored first as Rozlyn Haney scored a header off a corner kick by Stephanie Klovekorn to for an early 1-0 lead not even five minutes into the game. Wellsboro countered with their lone goal two minutes later as sophomore Jena Boyce scored off an assist by senior Emma Poirier to tie it at 1-1.
The score remained tied until 6:46 left in the opening half when Gabby Randall scored on a header off another Klovekorn corner.
The Lady Redskins then held on the rest of the way for the 2-1 win.
Wellsboro outshot Sayre 18-12 and edged them 5-4 in corner kicks. Freshman Lilly Abadi made 7 saves in goal for the Lady Hornets while Camry Lane stopped 11 shots for Troy.
The loss starts Wellsboro off 0-1 (0-1 NTL). The team will be back in action on Thursday, September 6 on the road in Troy.
