The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team had their 5-game win streak snapped in a 4-1 loss to Loyalsock on Monday, May 14.
The Lady Hornets gave up two quick runs in the first to Juliana Cruz and Kaitlin Welker to trail 2-0 early, then gave up a run each in the third and fifth innings to trail 4-0. To make matters worse, the Lady Hornets had a hard time hitting the lefty Cruz. Wellsboro had just one hit, a bunt single by freshman Jena Boyce through the first four innings of the game.
Once the fifth came around, however, the bats started to heat up. Sophomore Cathryn Brought singled to lead off the inning and later advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Three batters later, junior Hailey Neal doubled to score Brought to cut it to 4-1. The Lady Hornets had two more shots at attempting the comeback in the sixth and seventh innings, but came up short.
In the sixth, sophomore Ryann Adams singled to lead off but senior Sydney Tremper hit into a 6-3 double play. With one out remaining in the inning, freshman Kerrah Clymer doubled but was tagged out on a base running error to end the inning. Then in the seventh, Cruz retired the side to seal the Lady Lancer's victory.
Adams, Clymer, Brought, Boyce, and Neal had Wellsboro's five hits on the night.
Brought pitched a complete game, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks on 93 pitches.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 11-7 (11-3 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action at Wyalusing for their final game of the regular season on Wednesday, May 16.
