The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team got back to their winning ways on Thursday, January 25 with a 58-9 win over Troy.
Following a heartbreaking, overtime loss to Jersey Shore on Tuesday, the Lady Hornets showed "no mercy" as they walloped Troy. Wellsboro held a 12-4 lead after the first quarter but then outscored Troy 18-3 in the second to put the game firmly in their control and out of reach.
Wellsboro's defense held Troy scoreless in the third while the Lady Hornet's high-powered offense outscored Troy 28-2 over the final 16 minutes.
Three Lady Hornets scored in double figures on the night, led by senior Tory Self. Self recorded her third double-double of the season with a game-high 18 points and 10 steals. She also made 6 assists as she came up just short of a triple-double. Senior Lizzie Poirier scored 13 to inch closer to 1,000 for her career and sister junior Emma Poirier scored 10.
Sophomore Cathryn Brought added 7, sophomore Liza Manning had 4, junior Dani Hunt scored 3 off the bench, senior Mikel Shabloski pitched in with 2 points, and freshman Bailey Monks rounded out the scoring with a point. Manning led Wellsboro with 7 rebounds and also made 6 steals and blocked 2 shots, Emma Poirier grabbed 7 rebounds and Lizzie Poirier had 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
Wellsboro's JV team picked up their third win of the season in a 20-11 win behind 6 points by Hunt.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 14-1 overall (11-0 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Saturday, January 27 on the road in Wyalusing.
