The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams picked up a pair of wins against North Penn-Mansfield on Thursday, March 9.
In the boys game, the Hornets won 41-25.
"It was a great win I'm proud of our guys the way they played tonight," said head coach Jason Greenfield.
The Hornets came out with fire from the opening tip and pushed the lead to 8-0 early before the rival Tigers found the scoreboard. The Hornets led 12-4 after the first, then shutout Mansfield in the second to take a 17-4 lead into halftime. North Penn-Mansfield woke up in the second and outscored Wellsboro 15-14 to cut into the Hornets' lead and trail 31-19, but could never recover from the early deficit as Wellsboro outscored them 9-6 in the final quarter for the win.
Joseph Grab led Wellsboro with 22 points, Will Poirier had 7, Darryn Callahan and Nevin DeCosta scored 4 each, and Isaac Keane and Zach Singer scored 2 points each. Keane also finished with 7 rebounds, and Grab was active defensively causing multiple turnovers.
North Penn-Mansfield won the B game 32-16. Liam Manning led Wellsboro with 11 and Owen Richardson added 5.
In the girls game, Wellsboro won 17-5. The Lady Hornets led 5-0 after the first, 9-1 at halftime, and 15-3 after the third.
"Our girls played great man to man defense and had 40 rebounds in the game," said head coach Darrell Morris. "Although we missed too many easy baskets, the girls controlled the game from start to finish.That is what we have been all year, a tough, grind it out team."
Kathryn Burnett had 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist; Sarah Mosher had 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist; Bailey Monks had 4 points and 16 rebounds; Emma Brandenburg had 2 points and 3 rebounds; and Jena Boyce had 1 point, 3 rebounds, and 4 steals.
Wellsboro won the B game 14-10. Olivia Servatius and Emma Coolidge had 4 points each while Kathryn Burnett, Abbye Cavanaugh, and Emma Pietropola had 2 points each.
Both the girls (10-10) and the boys (13-7) will be back in action on Saturday, March 11 against Cowanesque Valley. The girls will also be at North Penn-Liberty later tonight.
