The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team opened the 2017 season with a 3-1 win over Northeast Bradford on Monday, April 3.
"Good win for the girls," said head coach Ron Brought. "Every girl in the lineup hit the ball hard during the game with Sydney Tremper almost going yard in the top of the 1st inning. Alyssa Yungwirth pitched very well with 13 strike outs and no walks. That's tough to beat."
The Lady Hornets scored 2 runs in the third inning to take the lead. A run by NEB in the fifth brought the game to 2-1, but Wellsboro added another run in the seventh to claim the first win of the season. The win was Brought's first as the new head coach of the Lady Hornets.
"After some early nervousness the girls settled in and put runners on base consistently," continued Brought. "It was a big relief for all of us to finally play, see some live pitching and earn a win."
Yungwirth led Wellsboro at the plate, going 2-for-4 and scoring a run. Sophomore Tiana Lecker, Tremper, freshmen Ryann Adams and Cathryn Brought, and junior Brianne Keane all added hits on the night. Brought had 2 RBI's and a walk, and sophomore Heidi Zuchowski and Keane added walks.
Yungwirth also went the distance on the mound, picking up her first win. Yungwirth struck out 13 of the 26 batters she faced, allowed one run and four hits.
Wellsboro (1-0, 1-0 NTL) will be back in action on Wednesday, April 5 at Canton.
