The Wellsboro Middle School Girls Basketball team went 1-2 on the day at the Towanda Tournament on Saturday, March 4.
The young Lady Hornets won their first game against Canton 27-11, lost to Wyalusing 24-19, and lost a close 23-22 game to Central Mountain.
Against Canton, Wellsboro led 18-1 at halftime and played their bench in the second half. Against Wyalusing, Wellsboro trailed 14-2 and outscored the Lady Rams 17-10. Then against Central Mountain, Wellsboro led 13-11 at halftime, but went 1-for-10 from the foul line down the stretch.
"I was very pleased with how our girls competed at the Towanda Tournament," said head coach Darrell Morris. "We played hard the entire day and were extremely competitive, even in the two losses.I was very proud of our 11 girls' effort. They gained a lot of valuable experience in very challenging tournament."
Chelsie English had 18 points, 22 rebounds, and 5 steals; Jena Boyce had 17 points, 2 rebounds, 8 steals, and 8 assists; Lindsey Marmara had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal, and 2 assists; Bailey Monks had 8 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 steals; Kiyah Boyce had 6 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 steal; Emma Coolidge had 4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 assist; Sarah Mosher had 2 points, 7 rebounds, 8 steals, and 2 assists; and Kathryn Burnett had 2 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists.
Emma Brandenburg had 4 rebounds, Emma Pietropola had 3 rebounds, and Abbye Cavanaugh had 3 rebounds.
Wellsboro (9-10) hosts rival North Penn-Mansfield on Thursday, March 9.
