The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams split with Troy on Saturday, February 18.
In the girls game, the Lady Hornets won 25-10. Wellsboro trailed 4-2 after the first quarter but rebounded to take a 12-6 lead at halftime and never looked back.
“We had a sloppy first quarter in which Troy outrebounded and outhustled us," said head coach Darrell Morris. "We settled down and got things rolling in the second, and finished the rest of the game fairly strong. We had some different girls step up today, which is a good sign when you can have your role players come in and give you quality minutes.”
Jena Boyce had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 6 steals, and 2 assists; Lindsey Marmara (3 rebounds) and Bailey Monks (5 rebounds) had 4 points each; Sarah Mosher (4 assists), Abbye Cavanaugh (5 steals), and Kiyah Boyce (6 rebounds) had 2 points each; and Chelsie English had 1 point and 8 rebounds.
Wellsboro's B team had a come from behind 19-16 win. Marmara had 6 points, while Emma Pietropola added 5 points. Olivia Servatius, Emma Cooldige, Emma Brandenburg, and Kathryn Burnett all added 2 points each.
In the boys game, Troy beat Wellsboro 34-33 on a last-second shot. The Hornets led 17-10 at halftime and outscored Troy 14-4 in the third quarter to hold a commanding 31-14 lead entering the fourth, but Troy outscored Wellsboro 20-2 and hit a three-pointer as time ran out to upset the Hornets.
Joseph Grab had 15 points to lead Wellsboro, Zach Singer had 9, Isaac Keane scored 5, and Nevin DeCosta finished with 4. Singer had 6 rebounds, Keane had 4 rebounds and 4 steals, and DeCosta had 2 assists.
Wellsboro also lost the B game 32-11.
Both teams are back on the road in Sayre on Monday, February 20.
