4 Hornets scored in double figures as the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team downed Troy 68-30 on Thursday, January 12.
Junior Dalton Prough (14), senior Alden Weiner (13), and seniors Brandon Lamphier and Jacob Singer (10 each) all broke double digits on the night for the Hornets as they picked up their 9th win of the season.
Wellsboro struggled to start early on as Troy sank the game's opening bucket, but the Hornets settled down and ended up outscoring the Trojans 19-11 as Lamphier scored all of his 10 points (3 three-pointers) in the quarter. Wellsboro struggled in the second quarter as they scored 9 points, but held a 28-19 lead at halftime before kicking it into high gear in the second half.
The Hornets outscored Troy 40-11 in the second half, behind an 18-point third quarter and 22-point fourth quarter. Wellsboro held Troy to three made field goals the entire second half as the Hornets rotated fresh guys off the bench, while Troy had most of their starters in foul trouble.
Prough finished with a game-high 14 points and had 8 rebounds, Alden Weiner had 13, and Lamphier and Singer both finished with 10. Junior Collin Pietropola scored 7 points, junior Nic Ingerick and sophomores Bergen Weiner and Andrew Brelo all added 4 points, and sophomore Holden Kennedy rounded out the scoring with 2.
Pietropola grabbed 5 rebounds on the night (all offensive), Ingerick had 5 boards, junior Quinn Henry had 5 assists, and Ingerick had 3 steals. Brelo also added 4 rebounds and 4 assists off the bench.
Wellsboro won the JV game 34-17 to improve to 9-1 on the year. Kennedy scored a game-high 12 points and freshman Billy Lechler finished with 8.
The Hornets are now 9-3 (6-1 NTL) on the year, and are tied with Athens, who the Hornets take on Monday night, for second in the NTL Large School Division standings. The Hornets travel to North Penn-Liberty on Saturday, January 14 for a 1:00 p.m. game.
