Athens girls down Troy 4-1 to go a game up in NTL standings

The Athens Lady Wildcats took over the top spot in the NTL with a 4-1 win over Troy on Thursday, October 12.
53 seconds into the game the Lady Wildcats took an early 1-0 lead. Athens capitalized on an early mistake by Troy as Morgan Ferguson gathered the ball, passed it up to Emily Lunger who found Rachel Hutchison for the goal. The rest of the first half was scoreless as neither team could convert potential scoring chances.
With Athens still up as the second half started, Troy's Nicole McClelland tracked down a loose ball and drove towards the net for the tying goal.
Athens later regained the lead on a Lunger goal with 24:31 remaining, then back-to-back Ferguson goals, with an assist by Lunger, in the final 7 minutes put the Lady Wildcats a game up over Troy in the NTL standings.
Sayre 2, North Penn-Mansfield 1
After three straight wins the North Penn-Mansfield Lady Tigers suffered their third consecutive loss by falling 2-1 to Sayre on Thursday, October 12 during Senior Night.
After a scoreless first 47 minutes of play the Lady Tigers finally put the ball in the back of the net. As the Tigers pushed the ball into Sayre territory, Amanda Rutledge centered the ball to Trinity Bogaczyk, then Alyssa Remely cleaned up the pass and sent a shot past Sayre's goalie for a 1-0 lead.
Sayre got on the scoreboard with 12:05 remaining as Stephanie Klovekorn was fouled in the penalty box, drawing a penalty kick. Klovekorn's shot went past keeper Alaina McKee to knot it up at 1-1. The Lady Redskins then broke the tie with 8:37 remaining on a goal by Madisyn Wheeler.
Sayre took 21 shots on goal to Mansfield’s 3 and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Sayre keeper Camry Lane recorded 2 saves in goal while McKee stopped 19 shots.
"We had them down 1-0 or so," said North Penn-Mansfield head coach Maryann Wilcox. "We got a very bad call on the outside. They kicked it out of bounds and ended up with a throw-in, which in turn led to the penalty kick off of that play. That was the turning point of the game right there. We have several close ones to take the lead again but unfortunately we couldn't put it in."
"Camry Lane had a fantastic game with some great saves," said Sayre coach Tracy Mennig. "Steph converted yet another PK after Maddie was tripped in the box. The girls fought hard for the win. They played some nice soccer tonight. Abby and Steph really controlled the middle."
Northeast Bradford 2, Williamson 0
The Lady Panthers won on a shortened game against Williamson on Thursday. The game was called 42 minutes in, because of a official injury.
Karissa Cowles led NEB with the first shot of the night with an assist from Karalyn Walter. Krista Hallett scored the final goal with an assist by Cowles.
NEB had a 7-1 advantage over Williamson in corner kicks. Kiah Russell made 4 saves in the shutout while Williamson's Mercedes Bailey stopped 10 shots.
Boys Soccer
Wellsboro 4, Galeton 0
The Hornets shutout Galeton with two goals in each half to improve to 13-0-1 (10-0-1 NTL) Thursday.
"It was a good game in tough conditions," said Wellsboro head coach John Shaffer. "It was wet and their small field really closes down space. I was happy with the number of chances we created but wish we would have finished more of them. We need to focus as we have 4 games over 6 days to finish the season."
A quick goal in the first three minutes by Noah Fitch, off an assist from Tanner Runyan, put the Hornets up 1-0. Wellsboro later increased the lead with 15 minutes remaining in the opening half as Fitch assisted Runyan to make it 2-0.
Wellsboro scored two more goals in the seocnd half, both off penalty kicks. Runyan made the first with 31 minutes remaining then Brett Rudy scored on the second penalty kick to make it 4-0 just three minutes later. The Hornets prevented any Galeton scoring attempts the rest of the way en route to their 10th shutout of the season.
Nate Redell made 4 saves on the night for the Hornets. Brandon Ruef made 11 saves for the Tigers.
