The Wellsboro Baseball team suffered their first loss of the season as Athens shutout the Hornets 10-0 on Monday, April 10.
Athens' Cody Jennings throw complete game, needing only 68 pitches to pick up the win. Jennings allowed only one hit on the night by junior Dalton Prough in the top of the sixth inning.
"Tip your hat to Jennings tonight," said head coach Philip Prough. "He was dominant with both the fastball and curve. The battery of Jennings and Joyce is probably the best in our league. They showed it tonight."
Jennings went 2-for-4 with a 2-run home run in first inning and had 3 total RBI's. Daniel Joyce was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Junior Johnny Rowland pitched the first five innings in the loss, walking two batter, hitting two batters, and striking out five. Sophomore Taynton Repard and freshman Billy Lechler finished the game out for the Hornets.
"We got beat by a better team but the score doesn't reflect our effort," continued Prough. "We made two errors to help some early runs. Then didn't get 2 calls later in the game that killed momentum. The next thing you know, it's a 10 run game. If we improve on some little things, we'll be fine."
The loss drops the Hornets to 3-1 (3-1 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Wednesday, April 12 at Troy.
